Eula Mae

Eula Mae (or Mae for short) was rescued from a kill pen in July 2021. She is a 22-year-old Percheron that has been just about worked to death, starved, and very abused.

Mae has hobble scars on her front legs, rope burn and wire fencing scars on her hind, bridle wear scars behind her ears and along her face, and all sorts of scars and marks everywhere on her head, neck, and body. They pulled on her bit so hard she is paralyzed down the left side of her face and is blind in her right eye. Plus, she is SEVERELY underweight. But she is sweet, gentle, and loves to be rubbed and pet.

Our hope is she recovers well and knows how much she is loved. So far, we are very happy with her progress just from the short time she has been home. Usually, at this stage of starvation, their organs start shutting down. She’s going strong and seems to have a good will to live. Mae is strong-willed, has a strong heart, and clearly is as tough as her namesake.

2022 UPDATE
Mae is thriving! We were worried initially about her health as she was about 1500 lbs. underweight, would not pee for 2 days, had open wounds on all 4 legs, and was lethargic.

We were thrilled the first time she laid down to sleep for a peaceful rest. She LOVES food and has gained weight although has a long way to go. She eats 4 times a day in increasing portions and races you to get there first.

She navigates the barn and pastures well despite her collapsed eye socket and blindness in her right eye and partial blindness in her left.

She is coming into her own with a funny, feisty, and very sweet personality! She loves to be brushed and loved on! Mae’s coat has gone from dingy, oily & full of bacteria to healthy & shiny!
